After a loss
Grief and mental health support
These national organizations serve Northwest Indiana through local chapters and programs, find them at their official sites: the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (afsp.org) for suicide loss survivors, including peer connection through Healing Conversations; The Compassionate Friends (compassionatefriends.org) for families after the death of a child; GriefShare (griefshare.org) for grief groups searchable by ZIP code; and NAMI Indiana for mental health support groups, education, and family programs. Lake County also operates behavioral health services through its county agencies, reachable through 211.
After a crime
Victim services and rights
Indiana law provides rights and assistance for crime victims. The Lake County Prosecutor’s office operates victim assistance services that guide victims and families through the court process and available help, and the officers or detectives on your case can make the introduction, ask them, it is part of their job. Statewide, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute administers victim compensation, which can help with certain expenses stemming from violent crime; start at in.gov and ask your victim advocate about eligibility.
After a fire or disaster
Disaster recovery help
The American Red Cross responds to home fires with immediate no-cost help, emergency lodging, essentials, and recovery planning; if the fire department that responded has not already connected you, reach them at redcross.org. The Salvation Army (salvationarmyusa.org) provides emergency assistance across Northwest Indiana. And 211 earns a second mention on purpose: after a fire or flood, it is the fastest route to every local program you qualify for. On the property side, our own fire response includes helping displaced families arrange temporary housing and navigate the additional living expense part of their claim, described here.
